I think it's funny how movie previews seem to be just long enough now to allow one the opportunity to forget completely what movie it is they came to the theatre to see.
Or maybe I'm just easily distracted by bright flashy things. |

"Dogen, one of the great of Buddhist teachers, was famous for elucidating the idea of shikan taza, which literally means "just sit". He pointed out that one doesn't sit (meditate) in order to attain Enlightenment because we are already Enlightened. If the Universe is truly One, then any notion of Enlightened as opposed to un-Enlightened was essentially dualistic, an incorrect way of seeing things. He pointed out that merely by doing the action of "sitting" one was achieving unification without the need for koans, levels of satori, deepening understanding etc. Proper practice was Enlightenment!"

End of The Century: The Story of The Ramones (2003) (110 mins.) By Jim Fields, Michael Gramaglia End of The Century is the essential Ramones film we’ve all been waiting for – packed with rare footage, interviews with band members and others like Joe Strummer and Eddie Vedder. The story is "a chronicle of a band whose influence stretches over two generations of musicians. They were kids who grew up together, a gang of misfits united in the belief in salvation and deliverance through the power of rock and roll. True pioneers of the Punk DIY philosophy, End of The Century moves from the band’s early years to the deaths of Joey and Dee Dee and their induction into the rock and roll Hall of Fame in 2002. Un- missable."
Dec. 3/ 9:00 PM show only
Dec. 4- 9/ 7:00 & 9:00 PM at The Cinematheque 100 Arthur St
Midnight/ Dec. 3 & 4
DIG ! (2004) (105 mins.) By Ondi Timoner
Grand Jury Prize winner at this year’s SUNDANCE Film Festival DIG ! is a hilarious and incredible film about the friendship and music of two bands – the Dandy Warhols and The Brian Jonestown Massacre. "It is entirely possible to mistake the documentary DIG for a mockumentary along the lines of Spinal Tap. The film is so unbelievable at times, so violent, so stupid, and so funny-that you wonder if the whole thing is a spoof. It isn’t. Narrated by the Dandy Warhols’ Courtney Taylor, DIG ! follows both bands, but concentrates mostly on Anton Newcombe (Massacre lead singer) as he repeatedly sabotages his band’s chances at success. DIG! Is a riveting and ultimately heartbreaking film about the music business and popular musicians and the desperation on both sides. The music in the movie is fantastic." Toronto Sun |

CKUW 95.9 FM Presents : Godzilla: King of Monsters at The Cinematheque
50th Anniversary Tribute: RARE 35mm Prints Introduced By JD LEES
"On Nov. 3, 1954 Gojira – or as he would come to be known around the world, Godzilla was born. The original Japanese version of Godzilla was an instant hit at the box office, grossing over 8 times it production cost in its debut theatrical run. The product of the Japanese film studio Toho, the creation of Godzilla struck a distinctive chord of terror with Japanese audiences who had vivid memories of two atomic bombs.
This year the lizard is 50 years old and has starred in over 25 films. The Cinematheque is proud to present the original Japanese version of GODZILLA (the American version was radically re-cut) direct from TOHO along with three other hilarious, and terrifying classics." -Colin Geddes

The Original Godzilla (Gojira) (1954) (98 mins.) By Ishiro Honda
At once audaciously lurid and fearsomely grim... Godzilla belongs with the and might well trump the art films Hiroshima Mon Amour and Dr. Strangelove as a daring attempt to fashion a terrible poetry from the mind melting horror of atomic warfare. Banish any mention of the butchered American release…this is a different beast altogether. Japan becomes a country under siege when hydrogen bomb testing in the Pacific Ocean reawakens a long dormant prehistoric monster who lays waste to cities, burning them to the ground with its white hot radioactive breath. |
